Swap Soda for Healthy Summer Drinks

Summer is the time of year to be outdoors, cooking out or picnicking with friends and family. The image of getting healthy is prevalent because people associate being outdoors with exercise.

But did you know the food at your picnic could be contributing to the obesity epidemic? This year, as you shop for the family picnic, ditch the soda and sugar-based drinks for these healthy and delicious alternatives. Sugary drinks are a large contributor to the obesity epidemic. Obesity is a risk factor for many types of preventable cancers and causes one-third of all new cancer diagnoses. Healthy eating is an important step in cancer prevention. At your next back yard cookout or pool party, swap out soda and sugary drinks with these refreshing and healthy options.

Iced Green Tea Lemonade

1 cup cold green tea
1/4 cup fresh squeezed lemonade (or 1/2 squeezed lemon)
1 sprig of mint

Berry Smoothie

2/3 cup frozen or fresh blueberries
1/2 cup low-fat vanilla yogurt
1/3 cup low fat milk or soy milk
1/4 cup pomegranate juice

Puree in a blender until smooth. Serves 1.

Pomegranate Spritzer

Mix equal parts pomegranate juice and sparkling water (or club soda) and add sliced limes.

Green tea, pomegranates and berries are all high in antioxidants, and a variety of vitamins and minerals. Use sparkling water or club soda to create a carbonated drink mixed with green tea or fruit juice. A smoothie is a great option that is not only tasty but also filling for a summer snack. Add any type of sliced fresh fruit or cucumber to water to instantly add extra flavor while staying hydrated. Enjoy summer and stay healthy!
