がん予防財団® is deeply saddened by the loss of former board chair ゲイリー・ライトル, who passed away earlier this week after a brief illness.

Every individual on the board of directors plays an integral role in the success of the Foundation’s mission. Gary took it upon himself to lead this important charge when he joined the board in 2010 and assumed the role of board chair in 2017, a title which he held until December 2021. From 2022 until his death, Gary remained an active Emeritus member of the board of directors and fervent supporter of the mission.

During his tenure, Gary created a culture of philanthropy and teamwork at the Foundation. He wanted to be sure the important work the Foundation was doing was communicated clearly, effectively and to anyone who would listen. Gary’s positive nature, unwavering support of those around him and willingness to lend an ear or a hand in every situation made the Prevent Cancer Foundation better and stronger.

“Gary was a truly wonderful person. For all those who knew him, you know that Gary did not always know how to log into a Zoom meeting, but he absolutely knew how to make you feel seen and supported,” said Jody Hoyos, CEO of the Prevent Cancer Foundation. “He supported the mission of the Prevent Cancer Foundation and the team with 100% of his infectious positive energy and I will always be grateful to him for that.”

In addition to serving on the Foundation’s board, Gary served on the boards of the University Club of Washington D.C. and the Washington Performing Arts Society.

“Gary was a consummate chairman of any board, giving of himself—his talent and treasure—in so many ways and extending the Foundation’s mission, message and reach.” said Carolyn “Bo” Aldigé, Founder of the Prevent Cancer Foundation. “His efforts on behalf of the Foundation enabled us to make new friends and reach beyond our traditional constituencies.  Gary always made himself available when we needed advice, support and help of any kind and we are beyond grateful.”

Gary’s passion for the Foundation’s mission was an inspiration to all who knew him, including his friend and current Foundation Board Chair William Magner III. In December, Mr. Magner spoke to the Foundation about the impact Gary had on him.

“After witnessing his own family’s struggle with cancer, [Gary] encouraged me to get involved. It was his personal story and dedication that inspired me to contribute, and I can only hope to continue paying it forward with my story, inspiring someone the way Gary inspired me,” Mr. Magner said.

We mourn the loss of Gary, an individual who was a steadfast believer in the mission of the Foundation and the power of philanthropy. Our thoughts are with his wife Sue, their children and grandchildren, and all those who knew and loved Gary—our colleague, mentor and friend—during this incredibly difficult time.
