5 unexpected ways to keep your kids safe and healthy at the beach

Summer is in full swing, and families across the U.S. are packing up their minivans and SUVs to head to the beach (or to the pool or lake). Though the beach can be fun for the entire family, it can also be tricky to keep everyone safe with all the activity and distractions. You may know the importance of protecting your skin (and your children’s skin) from the sun to reduce skin cancer risk, but here are five unexpected ways to keep your kids safe at the beach this summer.

  1. Dress your kids in neon swimsuits. Wearing bright or neon colors, such as orange, yellow and lime green, that will stand out in the water—not blue or standard green —makes it easier for you to spot your kids if they go underwater. In an emergency, every second counts, so visibility is key!
  2. Keep babies under six months old out of the sun. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) don’t recommend sunscreen for babies under six months because their skin is extra sensitive. Instead, you should keep your baby out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.; if you need to be outside during that timeframe, dress baby in lightweight, long sleeve shirts and pants and wide brimmed hats, and stay in the shade. Older babies and adults should follow those tips too, but should also wear sunscreen!
  3. Make sunscreen application easier (and maybe even fun). If you’ve ever had to apply sunscreen to a squirmy toddler, you know it’s no easy feat. The more they are covered by sun protective fabric, the less sunscreen you have to apply, so dress them in rashguards or long-sleeved suits. You can also try different methods of application like makeup sponges or these roller applicators. Check out fun products like stickers and UV wristbands that change color when it’s time to re-apply (generally every two hours or after being in the water). For a cost-free way to remember to reapply, set a timer on your phone.
  4. Make a plan for safe swimming. Be sure to check the weather and surf forecast before you head out. Ideally, you want to place your umbrella or tent near a lifeguard stand, but regardless of where you sit, make a plan to keep your kids safe while swimming. Set parameters for where they can swim, such as between two noticeable umbrellas or tents. Take turns with other adults who will be on duty to keep an eye out and set a word or phrase that you’ll say when transferring duty.
  5. Pack healthy and hydrating snacks. No beach day is complete without snacks! Fruit is the perfect healthy and hydrating snack for all ages. Cut up watermelon, grapes, strawberries or your favorite fruit and put in a food storage container or zip-close bag on ice in your cooler. You can even freeze the fruit for a cold treat on extra hot days! Save some of our favorite road trip snacks for the beach as well. And don’t forget to bring plenty of water!
