Washington, D.C. – A bipartisan group of lawmakers, led by Representative Max Miller (Ohio), on April 21 introduced a resolution recognizing April as Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Month, highlighting the critical importance of early diagnosis, prevention and increased access to lifesaving screenings. The resolution was co-led by Representatives Terri Sewell (Ala.), Brian Fitzpatrick (Pa.), Debbie Dingell (Mich.), Vern Buchanan (Fla.), Debbie Wasserman Schultz (Fla.) and Jodey Arrington (Texas).
The congressional resolution affirms a renewed national commitment to education and disease prevention. The resolution recognizes the importance of expanding access to cancer screenings, enabling healthy life habits, stopping more cancers before they start and driving new innovations to create a world where cancer is preventable, detectable and beatable for all.
“Prevention and early detection are among the most effective ways to reduce the burden of cancer in our nation,” said Jody Hoyos, CEO of the Prevent Cancer Foundation. “Routine screenings can lead to better outcomes, more treatment options, and more time with loved ones. This bipartisan resolution reflects a shared commitment to expanding access to these lifesaving tools and ensuring we all have the opportunity to prevent cancer entirely or detect cancer early and stay ahead of the disease.”
The Prevent Cancer Foundation thanks the resolution’s co-leaders and its original cosponsors, Representatives Seth Moulton (Mass.), Claudia Tenney (N.Y), Maria Salazar (Fla.), Carol Miller (W.Va.), Mike Lawler (N.Y.), Aaron Bean (Fla.) and Mike Carey (Ohio), for their support. The Foundation is also grateful for support of the resolution from peer advocacy organizations Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network and ZERO Prostate Cancer.
