Washington, D.C. – The Prevent Cancer Foundation® yesterday convened lawmakers, health policy leaders and advocates on Capitol Hill for a briefing titled “The future of cancer prevention: Policy solutions to close the screening gap.” The event spotlighted urgent challenges in cancer screening and early detection and outlined actionable policy solutions to improve access and equity nationwide.

More than two million Americans are diagnosed with cancer each year, and 600,000 lives are lost to the disease. Yet research shows that up to 50% of cancer cases and deaths are preventable, and early detection dramatically improves outcomes—nine out of ten patients diagnosed early live five years or longer.

The briefing highlighted bipartisan opportunities to expand coverage for innovative screening technologies, support patient navigation and reminder systems, increase funding for prevention and early detection programs, and address affordability and structural barriers to care.

“Our vision is a world where cancer is preventable, detectable and beatable for all,” said Jody Hoyos, CEO of the Prevent Cancer Foundation. “We have some of the tools to make this a reality, but barriers like lack of awareness, affordability and structural inequities keep too many people from getting lifesaving screenings.”

Also in attendance was Rep. Terri Sewell (D-Ala.), who spoke on the importance of the Nancy Gardner Sewell Medicare Multi-Cancer Early Detection (MCED) Screening Coverage Act, of which Rep. Sewell is one of the original co-sponsors. Named after her mother who passed from pancreatic cancer in 2021, the MCED Screening Coverage Act currently has 403 cosponsors across both chambers of Congress—remaining the single most popular bill in all of Congress and reflects broad, bipartisan recognition of the urgent need to modernize cancer screening and detection.

Attendees received a briefing book with detailed legislative priorities and actionable steps to co-sponsor bills that advance cancer prevention and early detection.

“There are opportunities right now that can increase cancer prevention and early detection and save lives,” said Ms. Hoyos. “This work takes a bipartisan commitment to make it happen.”
