Prevent Cancer Foundation mourns the loss of friend and colleague Lorelei Mitrani

Lorelei Mitrani and her daughter, Juliet

We at the Prevent Cancer Foundation are deeply saddened by the passing of our friend and colleague, Lorelei Mitrani. Lorelei died this week at age 36 from a rare and aggressive cancer less than one month after being diagnosed.

Described by colleagues as “the nicest person you will ever meet,” Lorelei radiated joy and warmth. She was both quiet and unassuming, taking some by surprise with her ability to quickly solve any problem put in front of her. Lorelei was full of never-ending optimism, boundless creativity, and a talent for bringing big visions to life.

Lorelei worked at the Foundation for nearly 10 years in a variety of roles and has been senior director of special events and major gifts since 2021. In this position, she oversaw the planning of the Foundation’s biggest fundraiser, the Annual Gala, and worked closely with board members and major donors.

In a recent filming for social media, we asked Lorelei what she was most proud of.

“I’m proud that not only do I get to come to work every day and make a difference myself, but in my work, I’m getting to connect people who are just as passionate about this mission to help support the Foundation and our work,” she said.

While Lorelei had countless accomplishments during her time with us, her true gift was in connecting with people and making everyone feel cared for, considered and encouraged.

“When the world was noisy, Lorelei was the quiet and steady presence moving us forward,” said Jody Hoyos, CEO of the Prevent Cancer Foundation. “No matter what was going on, she was always there to make sure the Foundation’s work was done, and done well, always in support of our mission to help people stay ahead of cancer. We did not get there in time for Lorelei and it’s a terrible loss for us all. But we will get there in her memory, for her husband, Dave, and their daughter, Juliet.”

Dave and Juliet will continue to be a part of our Foundation family, and we know all those who knew and loved Lorelei will surround the Mitranis with love and support. In Lorelei’s memory, we will never stop working toward a world where cancer is preventable, detectable and beatable for all.
