If you are reading this, it’s likely that your life has been touched by cancer in some way. Unfortunately, I am no exception. Cancer has left a permanent mark on my family: My mother passed away from breast cancer at a time when early detection methods were not as advanced or accessible and my wife of 42 years is currently fighting her own battle with cancer. Thankfully, early detection—through routine check-ups, better symptom awareness and advanced technology—has put her on the road to recovery. These personal experiences are a constant reminder of the role prevention and early detection can play in combating cancer.

Despite significant advancements that have reduced cancer mortality rates, the number of new cases has reached an alarming two million annually. Cancer remains the leading cause of death for people under the age of 85, underscoring the urgent need for continued efforts in this space. I knew there was more I could do, but didn’t know where to begin.

Philanthropy is important to me because I see it as a cornerstone in creating a world where cancer is preventable, detectable and beatable for all. Every day, countless individuals dedicate themselves to finding solutions and providing care for those affected by this disease. Supporting these efforts through philanthropy is essential to sustaining their vital work.

A passion for philanthropy tied with my personal connection to the cause led me to the Prevent Cancer Foundation. After witnessing his own family’s struggle with cancer, the former chairman of the board, Gary Lytle, encouraged me to get involved. It was his personal story and dedication that inspired me to contribute, and I can only hope to continue paying it forward with my story, inspiring someone the way Gary inspired me.

The Foundation stands at the forefront of this battle, making significant strides in cancer prevention and early detection. During my time as a member of the Foundation’s board and now following in Gary’s footsteps as board chair, I have supported the growth and success of our team while evolving our strategic thinking to address the ever-changing landscape of cancer prevention and early detection.

For those looking to embark on their own philanthropy journeys, I thank you. Don’t be afraid to start small by identifying community needs that resonate with you. What story are you passionate about telling? Engage with leaders and influencers in those areas, and focus on what aligns with your values. Begin in a way that feels comfortable, because you are in control of your philanthropic journey. With this approach, you are sure to have a meaningful and sustainable impact on what matters most to you. The Foundation is here to help you make that difference, providing guidance and opportunities to ensure your impact is felt far and wide.

I am filled with hope that together, through our collective efforts and dedication, we can create a future where cancer is no longer a threat, but a story of survival and triumph.
