How to celebrate Halloween with a healthy twist

A family of four put jack o'lanterns in front of their faces

U.S. families will spend more than $3.6 billion on Halloween candy this year. That’s pretty scary! Even though we know it’s best for our health to avoid lots of added sugar, it’s okay to have some sweets on special occasions. But Halloween doesn’t have to be all about the treats: Here are some tricks to take some of the focus away from the candy.

Get creative.

If you’re expecting trick-or-treaters at your home, ask your kids to help you pick out a fun alternative to candy, like temporary tattoos, stickers, stamps, Play-Doh or glow sticks. Don’t worry—other neighbors will have plenty of candy for everyone to enjoy. (Added bonus: These treats are a great way to include neighbors who may have food allergies or other restrictions!)

Get moving.

Plan something active for your family, even if it’s just walking instead of driving to trick or treat (when safe). Adding an active component to the day can encourage a healthier holiday. Try strolling around the neighborhood to look at Halloween decorations or playing Halloween music at home and hosting a dance party.

Get cooking.

After trick-or-treating, put the candy away and cook a healthy Halloween-themed meal together as a family. Try these Jack O’Lantern stuffed peppers with a side of Jack O’Lantern sweet potato slices. Consider decorating fruit into Frankensteins, ghosts and fangs for a group activity and healthy snack. After dinner, allow the kids a few pieces of candy and put the rest in the pantry or freezer to enjoy gradually over the next few months. Be upfront about this plan so you won’t be met with disappointed faces—it’s a good learning opportunity for kids to understand the importance of a balanced diet and enjoying treats in moderation.

However you choose to spend Halloween, encourage your family to practice healthy lifestyle habits throughout the year by exercising regularly and eating a healthy diet to reduce your risk of cancer. Now that’s something to scream about!
