Descripción general de la investigación

Many cancers can be prevented, and the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is one of the most powerful tools we have to do so. Survivors of childhood cancer, however, are less likely to receive this vaccine—even though they face a higher risk for HPV-related cancers later in life.
This project focuses on improving HPV vaccination rates among childhood cancer survivors by using short, easy-to-understand educational videos. These micro-videos are designed to meet young survivors where they are—on social media platforms they already use—by delivering trusted prevention messages in a format that feels relevant and approachable.

Rather than overwhelming survivors with medical information, the educational videos focus on clear, practical messages about why HPV vaccination matters and how it can protect long-term health. Survivors will help shape the content so it reflects the questions and concerns and from those who have lived through cancer.

This project’s aim is straightforward yet impactful: to increase HPV vaccination and prevent future cancers before they begin. By improving access to prevention-focused education, this project supports healthier futures for childhood cancer survivors across the country.

My “Why”

My interest in cancer research stems from the belief that cancer survivors should not have to face preventable health risks later in life. While working with childhood cancer survivors, I saw how easy it is for prevention efforts—like vaccination—to be missed once treatment ends. Cancer survivors have already been through so much, yet many face higher risks for other cancers that can be prevented. I am inspired by the opportunity to use research, communication and technologic innovation to help survivors stay healthy long after cancer treatment ends.

Por qué es importante la financiación

Support from the Prevent Cancer Foundation makes it possible to focus on cancer prevention for a group that is often overlooked once treatment ends. By reaching cancer survivors through social media platforms they already use, this project can directly support informed decision-making and help prevent future cancers—turning survivorship into an opportunity for lifelong health.
