Alexandria, Va. – In yet another remarkable achievement for the gaming community, Awesome Games Done Quick (AGDQ), an annual livestreamed video game marathon organized by Games Done Quick (GDQ), raised a total of over $2.5 million for the Prevent Cancer Foundation.
All-star gamers from around the world gathered in Pittsburgh to speedrun—play as fast as possible—their favorite games. In addition to approximately 2,000 attendees joining in person from the Steel City, tens of thousands tuned in on the official GDQ Twitch channel from across the U.S. and around the world to watch the “best of the best” take on their favorite games. All games were played live beginning on January 5 through the event’s conclusion in the early hours of Sunday morning, January 12.
The more than $2.5 million raised was comprised of mostly small, individual donations, adding up to big impact. The gaming community showed their support for cancer prevention and early detection efforts by tuning in for a combined 9,422,155 hours and donating to the Prevent Cancer Foundation, contributing over 40,000 separate donations throughout the week.
This was the second in-person AGDQ event since before the pandemic, with highlights from this year including a week-long “wellness quest” hosted by the Foundation. Throughout the week, participants completed different wellness challenges—including the ever-popular planking challenge—promoting healthy behaviors and lifestyle choices, culminating in a prize drawing for a plushie of the Foundation’s mascot, Earl E. Bird.
In its 14 years of partnering with the Prevent Cancer Foundation®, the speedrunning community has raised $25 million for the Foundation. AGDQ dollars have enabled the funding of new research, innovative, technologies, cancer prevention and early detection education and outreach, and community grants—both in the U.S. and abroad. In 2024, the Foundation announced support of nine research projects, four of which were made possible by AGDQ. The Foundation will announce its 2025 research grants at the end of this month, where five grants are expected to be funded by the AGDQ.
“Awesome Games Done Quick has cemented itself as a major catalyst in progress in cancer prevention and early detection,” said Jody Hoyos, CEO of the Prevent Cancer Foundation. “They are the ones ensuring there are resources for research, outreach and education so we can stay ahead of cancer, and we are inspired every day by their vision and generosity.”
