ALEXANDRIA, Va.— When screening for lung cancer with low-dose CT scans, detection of lung nodules is critically important, as a small fraction of these nodules may be cancer.  In order to assess this, a radiologist would measure the growth of these nodules over time.

Until recently, tools to obtain lung nodule measurement task specific image quality information have not been available. However, we now have the capability to provide global CT scanning sites with low-cost phantoms (test objects) and web-based analysis tools that provide high quality and fundamental image quality metrics to clinical sites that are essential for understanding lung nodule change measurement performance.

With this new capability come many questions. That’s what the Prevent Cancer Foundation® hopes to take on at its 14th annual Quantitative Imaging Workshop, October 2-3 in McLean, Virginia.

Since 2003, the Foundation has convened this specialized workshop, focusing on high-resolution CT imaging data for lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cardiovascular disease. The Workshop provides a forum to exchange ideas on quantitative CT imaging for early disease management, as well as on policy and advocacy for responsible lung cancer, COPD and cardiovascular screening. The Workshop emphasizes quality and consistency in screening.

Attendees include academic and community-based oncologists, experts in photonics and software development, pulmonologists and radiologists, federal policymakers and regulators, patient advocates, pharmaceutical and medical imaging industries and more.
