Five ways to stay healthy this fall season

The fall season has finally arrived! Changing leaves, holiday festivities and breaks from the hot temperatures of summer are all reasons to enjoy the change in seasons. With all these benefits, fall is also a great time to focus on staying healthy. Here are five fall activities to help you stay active (while hopefully having some fun).

Activity #1: Go to an apple orchard or pumpkin patch

Two classic fall excursions! An orchard or pumpkin patch are great places to walk around while enjoying the beautiful scenery and picking out (or maybe even snacking on) some great produce. Use the apples or pumpkins you pick and add some stewed apples to your next bowl of yogurt or try recipes like pumpkin spice protein bites or an apple salad.

Activity #2: Participate in some outdoor activities

Common fall sports such as football are back and perfect to play as the weather cools. However, a friendly game of flag football doesn’t have to be the only sport you take part in! Get a group of friends or family members together for a little competition or just for fun, such as a tennis or pickleball match, volleyball game or soccer tournament. Or, join an intramural sports team and participate in more organized matches while meeting new people.

Activity #3: Enjoy a healthy fall snack

One of the best parts about fall is all the familiar flavors coming back into season—pumpkin spice, anyone? Snack on apples from the orchard or create your own pumpkin yogurt dip. Tailgating before big games is also popular during the fall, especially if it includes great snacks. If you are attending a tailgate, try one of these healthy recipes that everyone will enjoy, or make one of these dips–they aren’t exclusive to just the Super Bowl!

Activity #4: Hiking

The gorgeous views and pleasant weather are an autumn staple and the perfect opportunity to exercise and peep at the beautiful fall foliage. Participating in physical activity for at least 30 minutes at least five days a week makes a big difference in your overall health and wellbeing. Going for a hike or even just a walk around the neighborhood can be a great way to enjoy all the changing colors and cool, comfortable temperatures while keeping yourself healthy. It doesn’t have to be extreme–just taking a walk to an area that you enjoy is a great start.

Activity #5: Rake up fallen leaves

Raking leaves is a common chore that might not sound like the most exciting activity to participate in. However, it is a great way to work your muscles while checking a task off your list. To make things a little more fun, don’t forget to leave a small pile of leaves for yourself to jump into as a reward for all your hard work.
