Take Your Healthy Lifestyle with You on Vacation

June kicks off the summer vacation season and who isn’t ready for a little rest and relaxation? While enjoying your getaway, don’t forget to keep your health in mind. Making healthy lifestyle part of your everyday routine is necessary in cancer prevention. Sun safety, healthy eating et exercise are important steps we sometimes forget while vacationing. Start your summer off right with these simple tips to continue to stay on track during your time off.

1. Active Activities
Keep your family active while on vacation and get moving for at least 30 minutes a day. Explore your new surroundings by walking or renting bikes to see all the sights. Research popular activities at your destination like hiking, surfing or paddleboarding.

2. Don’t Forget Sunscreen
If you are touring a new city or taking a beach vacation you are guaranteed to be out in the sun the majority of the day. Pack a wide brimmed hat and UVA/UBV protective sunglasses. Before heading out for the day, apply a palm full of at least 30+ SPF broad spectrum (UVA/UVB protective) sunscreen to your exposed skin and reapply every two hours while outdoors.

3. Stay Hydrated
Don’t forget while you are exploring a new city, lounging by the pool or touring museums to stay hydrated. Bring a water bottle everywhere you go – add a few slices of lemon or cucumber to give it extra flavor. Dehydration is much more than being thirsty; you can feel fatigued, get a headache and have trouble concentrating – it can be especially dangerous if you are spending time outdoors or exercising in a climate you are not used to.

4. Resist Fast Food and Eat Local
Take time before you travel to research the areas you will be visiting and look for local places to grab a quick bite or have a leisurely dinner. Make sure to treat yourself on vacation, but resist the urge to splurge at every meal; moderation is key.

5. Bring Healthy Snacks and Skip the Mini Bar
Avoid filling your backpack with unhealthy mini bar snacks before you head out touring. Research local farmers markets you can stop by to pick up fresh produce to snack on. Once you arrive at your destination, visit the nearest grocery or convenience store and stock up on nuts, yogurt and dried fruit that are easy to pack and take on the go. By snacking throughout the day you will be less hungry at meals and avoid over eating.
