Received the very first International Technology Transfer Fellowship funded by the Prevent Cancer Foundation from funds raised through AGDQ.
The aim of the UICC Technical Fellowships is to facilitate rapid international transfer of cancer research and clinical technology, exchange knowledge and enhance skills in basic, clinical, behavioral and epidemiological areas of cancer research cancer control and prevention and to acquire appropriate clinical management, diagnostic and therapeutic expertise for effective application and use in the home organization upon return.
Prostate cancer is the second most common cause of cancer and the sixth leading cause of cancer death among men worldwide. The worldwide prostate cancer burden is expected to grow to 1.7 million new cases and 499 000 new deaths by 2030.
Dr. Duggal performed his fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland from June 1-30,2016.
During his stay, Dr. Duggal conducted a small study on poorly differentiated genitourinary malignancies where exact tumor origin (prostate/urinary bladder/gastrointestinal tract) needs to be determined.
After concluding the study he realized that there are two prostate specific immunohistochemical markers which are useful in determining prostatic origin of the tumor that are not being used in his home institute. Not using these specific markers means he and his colleague could be misdiagnosing cases.
Utilization of these specific markers will help in early diagnosis and early institution of therapy in poorly differentiated malignancies.
