Rotary District 7610 recognizes Carolyn “Bo” Aldigé for her service to the community

(Alexandria, Va.)-After nearly thirty years of service, Prevent Cancer Foundation President and Founder Carolyn “Bo” Aldigé will be presented with the 2014 inaugural Citizen of the Year Award by Rotary District 7610.

The Rotary District 7610 Citizen of the Year Award is given in recognition of a non-Rotarian who exemplifies “Service Above Self.” The award recognizes an individual who has contributed significantly to improving the quality of life in the community and world at large.

A 1996 Washingtonian of the Year, Aldigé founded the Prevent Cancer Foundation in 1985 in honor of her father who died from cancer. Her tireless work has helped bring prevention and early detection to the forefront in the battle against cancer.

“Aldigé has earned the respect and praise of the medical profession, state and federal government officials, her peers in other nonprofits operating in this field, and countless cancer patients throughout the country and world,” said Peter O. Knetemann, President of the Rotary Club of Alexandria.

Aldigé serves on boards of directors/advisors of six National Cancer Institute-designated cancer centers and as a member of the boards of the National Coalition for Cancer Research, Friends of Cancer Research and the Intercultural Cancer Council. She has been a member of C-Change (formerly the National Dialogue on Cancer) since its inception. She also serves on committees and task forces of the American Association for Cancer Research, the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Preventive Oncology and has received each organization’s public service award. She is vice-president of the Global Lung Cancer Coalition and a member of the steering committees of the International Digestive Cancer Alliance and the International Early Lung Cancer Action Project.

Rotary International is a worldwide organization that helps create positive and lasting change in communities across the country. There are 2,200 Rotarians in District 7610, encompassing the northern and eastern parts of Virginia.
