Don’t Fry Day” Kicks Off the Summer Season

Published on July 13, 2015

(ALEXANDRIA, Va.)—To combat the nation’s rising skin cancer rates, the Prevent Cancer Foundation is partnering with the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention to promote the Friday before Memorial Day, May 27 as “Don’t Fry Day.”  The Prevent Cancer Foundation’s new interactive web resource, “Save Your Skin”, is a great source for sun safety-tips.

“Save Your Skin”, underwritten by Bristol Myers Squibb, provides a wide variety of sun safety tools—allowing visitors to easily check the UV index in their area, or even download smart phone apps to stay informed while on-the-go. There are also quizzes, video messages and other tools to educate the public on skin checks and sun protection.

Most skin cancer is caused by damage from the sun’s UV rays. This year, 68,000 people will be diagnosed with melanoma—the most dangerous type of skin cancer—and nearly 12,000 will die of the disease.

May is also National Cancer Research Month, which recognizes the important science that drives the fields of cancer prevention and treatment. In addition to this key research, the public must educate themselves—lowering their own cancer risk by making smart and healthy lifestyle choices.
