Prevent Cancer Foundation would like to thank all of the participants, donors, sponsors and volunteers who helped make this year’s Prevent Cancer 5k Walk/Run the most successful yet. This year we had a record setting 1,500 participants come out to Nationals Park and raise over $149,000 to support the Foundation’s mission of saving lives through cancer prevention and early detection! Thank you all for your hard work and dedication to this important cause.

Sunday’s weather provided the perfect conditions for an active morning outside. Participants began lining up at the Center Field gates around 7:30 a.m. to check in and start warming up for the walk/run. Andrea Roane of WUSA Channel 9 welcomed the 1,500 in attendance and introduced the 2013 5k Walk/Run Chair Allison Hutchins. Local fitness group, Dance Trance, led the crowd in an energizing six-minute stretch and dance routine before participants lined up for the start of the 5k.

This year’s event involved a two wave start with runners leading the charge at 9 a.m. followed by walkers and families with strollers at 9:05 a.m. After running around the stadium, runners and walkers enjoyed a beautiful scenic course that took them through Yards Park onto the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail before finishing up the timeline ramp of Nationals Park. Once across the finish line, participants refueled with food donated by Subway, Whole Foods of Old Town and Athena Water. They also had the opportunity to receive free health screenings from our health partners on site and to learn about cancer prevention and early detection by visiting the Prevent Cancer Super Colon™ and the Prevent Cancer Foundation information table. As an added bonus, participants had the opportunity to experience warming up like a pro inside the Nationals batting cages (open to anyone willing to strike out).

We want to give a big shout out to the top individual fundraiser Ginger Albright, who raised $3,225, winning a LifeSpan Exercise Bike. George Swygert’s Capital One team raised $1,605 to win the corporate team challenge with a prize of LifeSpan’s Treadmill Desk. And last but certainly not least, the Cancer Conquerors team won the non-corporate team challenge raising $10,745. Thank you to everyone for a job well done!

Many thanks to our generous sponsors Amgen (Presenting Sponsor), ESI (Triple), The Midtown Group (Triple), PwC (Triple), Venable LLP (Triple), Genentech (Double), Lilly USA (Double), Millennium (Double), MarcParc (Single) and our exclusive fitness partner LifeSpan Fitness.

We look forward to continuing to grow this great family-friendly event next year so even more people can learn about the importance of living a healthy lifestyle that included daily exercise, healthy eating and cancer screenings. Together we can Stop Cancer Before It Starts!
