KIPP DC Discovery Academy and the Prevent Cancer 5k Walk/Run

Recently, a beloved student of our school and community lost her mother to breast cancer. Diagnosis of her condition was made aware to our staff this past winter, and just as we began the summer preparing for the upcoming school year, we were informed that she had lost her battle with the disease. I know personally that the speedy progression of the disease and its ultimate fate was a real eye-opener and reminder of how serious cancer can be.

This disease is one that, historically, members of my family have suffered from and I am sure that at some point in most of our lifetimes we have all been touched by the effects of cancer or know someone who has. At KIPP DC: Discover Academy, we have created a culture where our students, parents and community can feel the warmth and care of our staff. The support for our families goes beyond the classroom and it is important to us that we continue to ensure that our values are being exemplified through all of our actions. This is why we as a staff of teachers and as an extension of family to our students and parents, are participating in the Prevent Cancer 5K Walk/Run. We want to honor the memory of a KIPP DC: Discover Academy parent, as well do our part to raise awareness for cancer prevention.

We know that as teachers in a close community, we have a great platform to share important and critical information regarding the prevention and early detection of cancer. Our influence with our students and families is powerful; our work as teachers extends way beyond academics in the classroom.
