Yesterday, the Senate Appropriations Committee voted to approve its FY17 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and related agencies bill. The bill gives $34 billion to the National Institutes of Health, a $2 billion increase (6.2 percent) from last year. The National Cancer Institute will receive a little more than $5.4 billion in the bill, an increase of $216 million (4.1 percent) from the previous budget. The National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities will receive a 4 percent increase in funding and the National Institute of Nursing Research will receive a 3.7 percent increase.
Funding for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cancer programs was held flat at current FY16 levels, $330 million, rejecting the proposed cuts in the President’s budget.
In a rare feat, the bill passed with bipartisan support. It was approved with only one senator, Bill Cassidy (R-LA) voting against the bill.
