The 10th annual Prevent Cancer Health Fair and 5k Walk/Run took place on September 16, 2018, at Nationals Park in the beautiful Capitol Riverfront neighborhood. Despite the threat of Hurricane Florence looming over the east coast the week before, the air was warm and the sky was clear—perfect for our walkers and runners taking on 3.1 miles for cancer prevention! Together, we raised more than $200,000 for critical cancer prevention and early detection programs.

Lucas Tomlinson and Kevin Corke from Fox News were our emcees for the day. Their spirit was contagious as they helped cheer participants across the finish line.
Former Washington Bullets (now Washington Wizards) player—and tallest player in NBA history—Gheorghe Mureșan joined us as our honorary chair. He shared how losing his mother to colon cancer has made him a passionate advocate in the cancer community.
Prevent Cancer Foundation® CEO and founder Carolyn Aldigé told the story of how she started the Foundation after losing her father to cancer so she could help others prevent these diseases. She also presented awards to:
- Our top fundraising teams, Team FitzGerald and Team Speth, who together raised more than $11,000
- Our top individual fundraiser, William FitzGerald, who raised more than $4,300
- Our largest team, Dovel Tech, who had over 63 team members
The fabulous Iesha Alexander warmed participants up with a Zumba routine that got everybody moving! Even Teddy joined in on the fun.
Once they were warmed up, the walkers and runners were off! Our 5k course took participants through Nationals Park and around the Capitol Riverfront area.
Our hundreds of runners and walkers kept their eyes on the prize: the finish line.
After the 5k, participants were invited to walk through our Health Fair, which had everything from free fitness demonstrations to cancer screenings and flu shots. The Prevent Cancer Super Colon® was there, too!
