2014 Walk/Run was a blast

Nationals Park went “green” on September 21 with over 1,300 runners and walkers for the Prevent Cancer 5k Walk/Run. This year’s event was a smashing success thanks to our participants and over 85 teams who helped raise more than $235,000.

A crew of diligent and passionate fundraising superstars ensured that we reached our goal before the event even started. Vernon Holleman (12 years old), the Top Individual Fundraiser, raised $12,350. The Top Team Fundraiser (which was also the team with the most members, totaling 56) was Venable LLP. They raised $24,757 in honor of their former partner, David W. Goewey.

A Mayorga Organics coffee cart gave participants a free jolt of caffeine as Mel and Ty from 107.3’s “Sarah, Ty & Mel” welcomed them with Foundation and cancer prevention trivia.

In the weeks following the event, we’ve received inspiring feedback from participants. One said, “It was a fantastic experience and I was incredibly impressed with the volunteers throughout the course and the awesome signage throughout,” and another noted that “it was as close to perfect as it could be.” One participant even said that it was “one of the most fun runs I’ve participated in.”

Thank you to everyone who came out to Nationals Park on the 21st to join us in our vision to Stop Cancer Before It Starts! It’s because of people like you that we are able to continue working toward a cancer-free future, in hopes of saving the lives of the 1.6 million Americans who are diagnosed with cancer every year.

A special thank you to our presenting sponsor Amgen Breakaway from Cancer® and to all of our sponsors who helped make this event possible!

Check out group shots from the event in our Facebook photo album, and stay tuned for more information about next year’s 5k Walk/Run.
