Recognizing that Washington, D.C., has the highest state-level breast cancer mortality rate in the country, the Prevent Cancer Foundation provides funding for the George Washington University Breast Care Center’s mobile mammography unit — the Mammovan. The van provides free mammography screenings to women in D.C., Maryland and Northern Virginia community centers, clinics and churches.
Since the program’s inception in 1996, the Prevent Cancer Foundation has supported the program to increase access to mammography services among minorities, the poor and the uninsured. Additionally, the program works to ensure that every woman with abnormal results receives follow-up diagnoses and treatment, regardless of her ability to pay. The program provides screening mammograms to over 2,000 women annually. Over the program’s history, more than 35,000 mammograms have been performed in neighborhoods and at work sites, leading to the diagnosis of more than 100 breast cancer cases.
