Education about cancer prevention and early detection to all populations is an important part of the mission of the Prevent Cancer Foundation. For many years, the Foundation has offered information and national and community-level education programs to the public and health professionals.
Breast Health Education for Young Women (BHE)
- The Breast Health Education for Young Women Facilitator’s Guide is an interactive skill-building educational tool designed for use in both school and out-of-school settings. The guide has been used across the country to encourage young women to adopt behaviors supportive of breast health and to dispel myths about breast cancer. The guide includes step-by-step instructions for group educational sessions.
- Launched in 2006, the Community Grants program fulfills the mission of both education and community outreach. Grants support local cancer awareness, education and screening programs across the US for all populations, especially underserved communities. Dialogue for Action™
- Since 2002, the Dialogue for Action™ , an annual national conference, has brought together a diverse group of health professionals and survivor advocates. The Dialogue began with a focus on increasing colorectal cancer (CRC) screening as part of a comprehensive and coordinated cancer prevention strategy. The Foundation has partnered with 17 states to increase screening according to their state-level comprehensive cancer control plans. The Foundation has also worked with 10 American Indian/Alaska Native tribes and urban Indian health organizations to address the unique challenges of CRC screening in Indian Country. In 2013, the Dialogue for Action on Cancer Screening will expand beyond a specifically colorectal cancer focus to include the mandated guidelines-driven cancer screenings seen in quality measures (colorectal, cervical and breast cancer screenings) and will also cover issues related to other cancer screenings (e.g., prostate, lung and skin). This is not the first time the Dialogue model will be applied to other cancer sites:in May 2007, Utah hosted the first-ever Dialogue for Action™ on Ovarian Cancer with emphasis on earlier detection and optimal treatment for women with ovarian cancer.
Workshops and Summits
- Since 2004, the Foundation convened a series of annual workshops related to prevention and early detection of lung cancer. Since 1998, the Foundation has partnered with the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the Cancer Leadership Council, the Coalition of National Cancer Cooperative Groups, and the Oncology Nursing Society to hold an annual summit on cancer clinical trials .
