The Quantitative Imaging Workshop (QIW) XX took place on November 2-3, 2023. This was a virtual, high-impact, multi-disciplinary forum for the advancement of quantitative CT imaging biomarkers for early thoracic disease management. Attendees explored exciting new biomedical opportunities that arise with the use of these transformational imaging technologies. The Workshop convened leading stakeholders from industry, academia, professional societies, government and patient advocacy to discuss progress and make recommendations about next steps.
Since 2004, the Quantitative Imaging Workshop focuses on the advancement of quantitative low-dose computerized tomography (LDCT) imaging biomarkers for detection and management of early thoracic disease—lung cancer, COPD and cardiovascular disease—three of the top four leading causes of death in the U.S.
Beginning in 2013, each year at the Workshop the Prevent Cancer Foundation® presents the James L. Mulshine, M.D., International Leadership Award to an individual who has had a profound impact on reducing the toll these diseases take on the health of Americans and individuals around the world.
The 2023 James L. Mulshine, M.D., International Leadership Award honored Professor Matthijs Oudkerk, M.D., Ph.D., for his role as a co-principal investigator of the NELSON randomized screening trial. The NELSON trials successfully demonstrated the mortality benefit of lung cancer screening for Europe and led to the recognition of lung cancer screening by 27 nations as a recommended cancer detection service for 750 million individuals.
