5K: A Hit with Runners & A Success for Cancer Prevention

The 2nd Annual Prevent Cancer Foundation 5K held last Saturday, September 25, had lots of high points and some very poignant moments as well. Raising nearly $60,000 (with donations still coming in!) in support of cancer prevention and early detection, the 5K received overwhelming praise from participants, volunteers, and supporters. The Washington Running Report marked the Prevent Cancer Foundation 5K as the beginning of the fall racing season. The WRR article also noted that the race’s potential is “almost limitless.”

The combination of runners, walkers, volunteers, Foundation board members, and MC WUSA Channel 9 weekday anchor Andrea Roane and Special Guest Ivan Carter, host of Washington Post Live on Comcast Sportsnet, made for a memorable event.

Special thanks to our 5K sponsors: PhRMA, Amgen, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Millennium, and Pricewaterhousecoopers, whose support of cancer prevention demonstrate true leadership in the corporate community. We also greatly appreciate our race partners Georgetown Running Company, Powerade, Sport and Health, Subway, Design Cuisine, Reston Limousine, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Giant Food and Luna Bars for providing food and beverages, gift certificates, coupons and awards for our race participants and helped us recognize all the hard work and dedication of the racers.

The participation of teams and the ability to participate in memory of or in honor of a loved one added an extra enthusiasm to the 5K as well. Team Sara, that raised over $3,000 for the 5K, and Team Allan, that raised over $1,000 were race supporter favorites and made the reason for the event and the Foundation’s mission, to advocate and support the prevention and early detection of cancer through research, education and community outreach to all populations, including children and the underserved, clear to all who attended.

Preparations for next year’s race are already underway. The date for next year’s race is Saturday, September 24, 2011 so check the race micro-site often for updates. See you next year!
