2012 Spring Gala

The Prevent Cancer Foundation’s 18th Annual Spring Gala, Modern + Majestic = Switzerland, was held on Friday, March 9 under the gracious patronage of His Excellency, the Ambassador of Switzerland, Manuel Sager and his wife, Mrs. Christine Sager. The event raised over $1.4 million, thanks to Lighting the Way for Prevention pledge drive, our inaugural online/silent auction, sponsorships, David Tutera’s online Facebook campaign and gala ticket sales.

Over 800 guests were welcomed into the National Building Museum with a half-dozen traditional alpine horns and flag throwers making the guests feel as if they were in Switzerland. Once inside, white clad waiters from Occasions Catering greeted everyone with a signature “Swiss cocktail” consisting of champagne and Elder Flower liquor.  The lovely décor, provided by WE TV personality, and Foundation board member David Tutera was stunning.  The entire museum was shrouded in flowing shades of blue and white drapery, with tables set with gorgeous arrangements of white hydrangea and calla lilies, hanging crystals and royal blue, aqua and silver accessories.  As guests entered the dining area they were treated to a beautiful vista invoking glacial mountains and winter wonderland.

Following dinner, the 2012 Cancer Champion award went to long time friend of the foundation, Congressman Michael Oxley (R-OH), for his contribution in the advancement of cancer prevention and early detection.  Board member Andrea Roane introduced cancer survivor and professional singer, Julie Delgado, whose two songs mesmerized the audience and were the highlight of the “Lighting the Way to Prevention” pledge drive. Julie’s personal story and singing alone raised $38,000.

David Tutera, who is best known as a celebrity party planner and host of WE TV’s “My Fair Wedding” once again worked his magic and transformed the National Building Museum into a breathtaking celebration of the beauty and charm of Switzerland. David even solicited his Facebook Fans to donate funds to Stop Cancer Before It Starts!

Special thanks goes out to our Gala Chair, Joann Piccolo, and Dinner Committee Chairs, Nicole and Rick Rodgers, and all of our sponsors whose generosity made it possible to exceed our goal and ensure that cancer prevention and early detection continue to be at the forefront of the war on cancer.
