ALEXANDRIA, VA — The Prevent Cancer Foundation is proud to celebrate its silver jubilee as it commemorates 25 years of progress through prevention. The Foundation continues the fight for cancer prevention and early detection through research, education and community outreach to all populations, including children and the underserved.
In 1985, compelled by the memory of her late father, Edward P. Richardson, who died of cancer, Foundation President and Founder Carolyn Aldigé embarked on a mission that an emphasis on prevention could help decrease cancer deaths and incidence rates. Since then, through its research, education and outreach efforts, the Foundation has worked diligently to spread the prevention message to the public, spurring ground-breaking research and new ways to reach target audiences.
“Nearly 25 years ago, the Prevent Cancer Foundation began to raise awareness and educate the public about the power of cancer prevention,” explains Aldige. “Now the nation is catching up by focusing on prevention and wellness as weapons in the fight against cancer.”
Funding from the Prevent Cancer Foundation has helped researchers make significant strides in battling cancers that can be prevented — such as lung, oral, colon, testicular, breast, cervical, prostate, and skin cancer — through lifestyle changes or early detection and prompt treatment. Moreover, Foundation programs such as ịCelebremos la vida!, the Mammovan, National Dialogue for Action for Colorectal Cancer Screening and Annual Lung Cancer workshops, and community grants have helped to educate groups across the nation about cancer prevention. The Prevent Cancer Super Colon™ continues to travel the nation while raising awareness about this preventable cancer that is highly curable when detected early through screening. While another signature effort, the Congressional Families Cancer Prevention Program, enables a bipartisan group of spouses of members of the Congress, Executive Branch and Supreme Court to work with the Foundation and spread the cancer prevention message around the country.
Over the years the Foundation has provided more than $113 million in support of cancer prevention research, education and outreach programs nationwide and has played a pivotal role in developing a body of knowledge that is the basis for important prevention and early detection strategies. The Foundation has funded over 400 scientists at over 150 leading medical institutions across the country and the Foundation’s public education programs have applied this scientific knowledge to teach the public about ways they can reduce their cancer risks.
