Prevent Cancer Foundation Awards $80,000 Grants for Cancer Prevention Research.

(Alexandria, Va.) – Scientists at four major universities have been awarded 2-year $80,000 grants to fund early research in cancer prevention, the Prevent Cancer Foundation announced today. The latest round of Prevent Cancer research grants went to scientists at Georgetown University, Johns Hopkins University, the University of Illinois – Chicago, and the University of Pennsylvania.
“These talented minds are our hope for a cancer-free future and I am delighted that our grants and fellowships will support them as they continue their important work,” said Carolyn Aldigé, president and founder of the Prevent Cancer Foundation. “It is because of researchers like them that we have come so far in cancer prevention and early detection and it will be because of them that we will continue to make progress toward a cancer-free future.”
Each grant recipient will receive $40,000 per year for two years. The six cancer prevention research projects were selected from a nationwide pool of 64 applications. Proposals were reviewed by Prevent Cancer’s Scientific Review Panel before being approved for funding.

Marcia and Frank Carlucci Charitable Foundation Award in Cancer Prevention and Early Detection:
Ying Fu, Ph.D., Georgetown University, Omega-3 Fatty Acids for Liver Cancer Prevention
Lilly USA Research Award in Cancer Prevention and Early Detection:
Ronan Kelly, M.D., M.B.A., Johns Hopkins University, Targeting the Hedgehog Pathway in Barrett’s Esophagus Using Itraconazole
Figdor Family Research Award in Cancer Prevention:
Ronac Mamtani, M.D., M.S.C.E., University of Pennsylvania, Impact of Metformin On the Risk of Prostate Cancer
Richard C. Devereaux Outstanding Investigator Award in Lung Cancer Prevention:
Kathryn Taylor, Ph.D., Georgetown University, Smoking Cessation in Lung Cancer Screening Participants: A Randomized Trial
