Support for cancer prevention programs reaches underserved communities nationwide.

(Alexandria, Va.) – Four community organizations on the front lines of the battle against cancer will receive a total of $40,000 in grants for cancer prevention education programs, the Prevent Cancer Foundation announced. Each of the $10,000 grants supports cancer programs focusing on breast, cervical and colorectal cancer.
The Community Grants program awards funds to community programs across the United States that:

The Foundation for Healthy Communities will develop a New Hampshire- specific health education module on breast, cervical and colorectal cancer screening. The program will provide culturally- appropriate material tailored for low-literacy in 7 languages (Arabic, English, Nepali, Portuguese, Spanish, Swahili, and American Sign Language). This grant will be named for the Awesome Games Done Quick video speed gaming community that raised more than $1 million this year to support the Prevent Cancer Foundation’s work.
Georgia Regents University will develop and evaluate the colorectal cancer lifestyle tips (diet, physical activity and colorectal screening) component of the Down Home Healthy Living Cookbook, including diet, physical activity and colorectal screening. This resource will be shared with 7,200 African Americans in 13 states as part of a colorectal screening intervention.
The Minnesota Cancer Alliance will develop and test culturally specific mailing and educational materials for Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccinations to be used in Minnesota’s America Indian communities for the prevention of cervical cancer and other HPV-associated cancers.
The Los Angeles County Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® will implement a culturally-competent outreach and education program, reaching community members at faith-based events, training lay Hispanic/Latino community health educators (promontoras) and motivating Latinas to seek breast health information and screening services to reduce late-stage diagnosis.
The Prevent Cancer Foundation received 107 applications from organizations around the country for its grants cycle in 2013. Four grants were awarded in 2013 and four projects were chosen for the 2014 grant awards program. All eligible applications were reviewed by an external review panel of community outreach, clinical and public health research experts.
