Family honors father’s legacy of service with the Prevent Cancer 5k

Annual Walk/Run encourages families to learn about cancer prevention and early detection

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The day after Keestra Smith’s 30th birthday last year, her family gathered in Washington, D.C. — but it wasn’t for a birthday party. Instead, they were running.

Keestra and her family were running together at the Prevent Cancer Foundation’s 5k to honor the memory of father, who passed away earlier that year from Cholangiocarcinoma, or cancer of the bile duct. This year, the Foundation will host its 7th Annual 5k Walk/Run and Health Fair on Sunday, October 4th at Nationals Park. Keestra and her family will be back again to encourage healthy behaviors while raising money for the Foundation’s mission of saving lives through cancer prevention and early detection.

Participants will take off from the starting line at Nationals Park for an untimed 5k walk or run. When they cross the finish line back at the stadium, they can explore a health fair featuring more than 20 community partners promoting healthy living, providing free cancer screenings and healthy snacks and entertaining youngsters in the Kids Zone. Participants can also check out the Nationals’ dugouts and take a swing in the batting cages.

“Hours before my dad passed, my family gathered around his bedside and he reminded us that life is about service,” she said.  “The Prevent Cancer Foundation provided me with an amazing opportunity to share an experience with my family that honors my dad’s triumphant spirit while working with my community to spread the importance of cancer prevention.”

The Prevent Cancer 5k Walk/Run and Health Fair is a family- and dog-friendly event. All dogs must be on leashes and have appropriate tags. The event will take place rain or shine. Cost of individual registration is $30, and teams are highly encouraged.

Media Availability: Keestra Smith will be at the 5k and available for interviews.
