ALEXANDRIA, VA — First-time World Series of Poker (WSOP) finalist Soi Nguyen has pledged to donate 1 percent of his winnings from the event to the Bad Beat on Cancer (BBOC) initiative. Nguyen, who is a novice to the poker industry, has made it to WSOP’s “November 9” and will have a chance to become the 2010 Champion. He could win $8,944,138 in prize money.
BBOC was launched by professional poker players and Prevent Cancer board members Phil Gordon and Rafe Furst at the 2003 World Series of Poker. Since its inception, the initiative has raised more than $3.2 million to fund the Prevent Cancer Foundation’s programs: cancer prevention and early detection, educational programs and outreach to underserved communities across the country. This year, Bad Beat on Cancer has teamed up with the WSOP to support the Nevada Cancer Institute.
“This whole WSOP experience has been a true blessing for me,” Nguyen says. “So anything I can do to give back is not an option, but a necessity. Cancer is a terrible disease that has affected millions of people worldwide, and I’ve seen firsthand how nasty this disease can be. I feel that by pledging some of my winnings at the WSOP, I’ll be doing my small part to help defeat this disease once and for all and truly put a Bad Beat on Cancer.”
“We are very grateful for Soi’s pledge,” said Jan Bresch, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Foundation. “As a novice to poker we are extremely excited to see him make it to the final round and we also look forward to a great working relationship with him.”
The final table and the championship of the 2010 World Series of Poker will be played November 6 through November 9 at the Penn and Teller Theatre at the Rio Hotel in Las Vegas.
