I graduated from college in May and moved to D.C. to live alone because I wanted to establish my own “foundation.” I studied music, changed, grew up and realized I needed to make a more permanent change – I needed to find a way to banish negativity, do what I love (write, tweet and blog) and have a positive effect on the world.
I began working at the Prevent Cancer Foundation in August shortly after an internship with the National Organization for Women (NOW). It was during my time at NOW that I learned about blog carnivals. A blog carnival is a blog post linking to other blog posts on a specific topic. It is a way of uniting different voices for a single cause.
You would be hard pressed to find someone who has not been affected by cancer. More than 1.6 million Americans will be diagnosed this year alone and more than 580,000 people will die from the disease. But even if you have not been personally touched by cancer, we all have loved ones we would like to protect from cancer.
Here is where you come in: We are organizing a blog carnival to be published on Wednesday, October 23rd. We are seeking submissions from anyone with a story to tell. Cancer affects everyone. We want to hear your stories and put faces behind the statistics – you don’t even have to call yourself a writer.
I’ll start: I prevent cancer for the family and friends whom I could never live without. I especially prevent cancer for my father. With a family history of two different types of cancer, my father took back his health in his early 50s. I tease him for knowing so much about tempeh and flax seed, but I’m lucky to have a father who is doing his best to be around for a while, never taking a day off running, swimming or cheering me on.
Who do you prevent cancer for? I want to share your story on October 23rd.
Send a link to your blog post to Rebecca Evans at rebecca.evans@preventcancer.org by COB Monday, October 21st, 2013. Please keep your post to 500-700 words. Photos and links are helpful. Send us your post in a Word document if you are interested in participating but do not have a blog. We can publish your post as a guest post on the Prevent Cancer Blog.
We are all in this fight to save lives through cancer prevention and early detection and your story can inspire and inform so many. It is my hope that this blog carnival can add to the many voices that want to Stop Cancer Before It Starts!
