The Prevent Cancer Fantasy Football Challenge

On Wednesday November 6, friends, family and colleagues gathered at the Bayou in Georgetown to participate in the third annual draft night fundraiser for the Prevent Cancer Fantasy Football Challenge, a fun filled evening of competition and strategy to support Prevent Cancer Foundation’s mission of saving lives through cancer prevention and early detection.

The Prevent Cancer Fantasy League is made up of 16 teams divided into 4 divisions and is a “mini-season” within the traditional NFL season. The Prevent Cancer league season consists of three consecutive regular season games followed by two playoff rounds. Only division winners advance to the playoffs. The grand prize includes an incredible Washington D.C. sports package featuring premium tickets to Capitals, Nationals and Wizards games.

Among the evening’s highlights prior to a competitive and lively draft, Carolyn “Bo” Aldigé thanked the crowd saying, “This event really makes a difference not only to raise money and awareness on the prevention and early detection of cancer but to also introduce friends and family to the Prevent Cancer Foundation.” The Prevent Cancer Foundation benefits from a variety of local fundraising events hosted by volunteers across the country.

Since 2011, Headley Butler, Stuart Prince, Roger Edwards and Victor Maddux have organized this event with friends and colleagues. Over the last three years, the group has raised nearly $30,000 in support. Speaking with Headley, he describes his idea behind the event. “We started this event three years ago as a way to use the incredible popularity of fantasy football to raise money for Prevent Cancer, a great organization we wanted to support further. The draft night and short season fantasy football format has been a lot of fun for participants and we feel we’ve achieved our goal of raising awareness and money for Prevent Cancer. It’s also an easy and entertaining fundraising format for others to replicate and we would love to help see it grow beyond this single annual event.”
