Fun, easy and memorable ways to support the Prevent Cancer 5K

Only three more months before the Prevent Cancer 5k Walk/Run on Sunday, September 29 at the home of the Washington Nationals! Summer is a great time to gather friends, family and coworkers for an individual or team fundraising event or project that will support the Prevent Cancer Foundation’s mission to Stop Cancer Before It Starts! Want to support the Foundation’s work in cancer prevention and early detection, but don’t know where to start? Here are just a few simple, fun and inspiring ideas on how you or your team can contribute to the Prevent Cancer 5k:

  • Form a 5k team of friends and loved ones. Running or walking with a group can boost your morale and make training for a 5k more enjoyable. You can also multiply your fundraising efforts by having friends and family work together on a fundraising event or project.
  • Ask friends or family to sponsor you. Tell people why you are running and why cancer prevention and early detection is important to you. Sponsors will have the opportunity to make their 5k donations in honor or memory of a loved one that has been touched by cancer.
  • Find out your company’s policy on corporate matching and giving. Many companies are willing to donate or match the donations that you receive for a charitable cause.
  • Host a fundraising event. Many local businesses, including restaurants, bars, fitness classes and bowling alleys are eager to work with you on an event that benefits a charity and will often donate part of their proceeds from the event to support your 5k efforts. The Foundation, for example, recently hosted a 5k Kickoff Happy Hour at Wilson Tavern in Arlington, VA. In a few short hours we raised over $800 from the sales of wristbands, t-shirts and raffle tickets and partial proceeds from the bar.

Last year several of our 5k participants coordinated some unique and exciting fundraising events in support of their 5k team. In 2012, the Dance Trance DC 5k team hosted “Dance Trance Moves to Prevent Cancer,” a one hour dance class followed by a happy hour with raffle drawings on the roof of their studio. In one evening the Dance Trance team raised funds to support the Foundation, recruited several new members to join their team and showed everyone how enjoyable cancer prevention can be!

If you plan on hosting your own individual fundraiser let us know! You can share your ideas/plans with the Foundation or Allison Hutchins. You can also check out a long list of ideas on our fundraising webpage. We would love to help in any way we can. We can’t wait to see you, your family and friends at the 5k Walk/Run on September 29 at Nationals Park!
