sb2Volunteering is a foundation that this country has been built on, and when one can find an opportunity to volunteer for a great cause and have fun at the same time, it’s a bonus.  Volunteering at the Prevent Cancer 5k Walk/Run & Health Fair is one of those opportunities. Every year, 100 volunteers make the 5k a huge success by helping set up, checking-in participants, passing out giveaways, cheering on the runners and walkers, helping at the Health Fair and much more. Your help is vital to the success of the event. In gearing up for this year’s 5K we talked to one of our long time volunteers and dear friend of the Foundation, Sue Buckley, about why she volunteers year after year.

“I have volunteered for a lot of different organizations over the years but just love the people at the Prevent Cancer Foundation,” Sue said. “Everyone is dedicated to the cause. They make sure everyone is enjoying their activities while learning about all the benefits of prevention and early detection. You get to meet some awesome people when you volunteer and their stories are incredible and heart wrenching at times.”

As a longtime volunteer at the Prevent Cancer Foundation’s Annual Spring Gala, Sue was excited to switch things up a few years ago to help out at the Prevent Cancer 5k Walk/Run when it moved to Nationals Park. She brought several friends with her to help make the new location a success. “We traded in our gowns and tuxes for tutus and t-shirts.”

sb1At the 5k, Sue and her volunteer friends love going behind the scenes of Nationals Park by checking out the dugouts and batting cages. But the best part? “Helping the Prevent Cancer Foundation with their mission is very rewarding,” she said, “So come on out and join the fun… there will be a tutu, or a t-shirt, waiting for you!”

We are so thankful for incredible volunteers like Sue who make our fundraising events a huge success.
