Holidays are a time for celebrating, loving and giving – not living in fear. The word “cancer” inflicts fear in millions of Americans every day. In 2013 alone, 580,000 people will die from the disease, taking away the mothers, fathers, spouses, siblings, children and friends we hold especially dear to our hearts during this season. Research shows that up to 60 percent of cancer cases and more than 50 percent of cancer deaths are preventable. Why are we still living with this fear?
Prevent Cancer is proud to be participating in the second annual #GivingTuesday, an official call for donations on the Tuesday following Black Friday and Cyber Monday. #GivingTuesday is the kickoff to the giving season and a reminder of what the holidays are really about. Last year marked the first ever #GivingTuesday with over 2,000 participating organizations. This year over 8,000 organizations are participating and creating innovative digital campaigns focused on giving.
We are participating in #GivingTuesday not only to raise awareness and start a conversation but also to prove that social media can be a tool for positive change. The Prevent Cancer Foundation believes in the future more than anyone – a future where cancer prevention methods are widespread and loved ones aren’t prematurely taken from the world. A future where the knowledge we know to be true is accepted as common fact – only five percent of cancer deaths are hereditary. Cancer is preventable or can be detected early when more successfully treated.
Post-Thanksgiving shopping gets more intense every year. Sales start in the middle of the night and normally rational people fight to the death over shoes, toys and video games. But let’s not forget what this season is really about: giving. I know that today is Cyber Monday, but tomorrow is #GivingTuesday. Give anywhere from a little to a lot and help us Stop Cancer Before It Starts! and carry out our mission of saving lives through cancer prevention and early detection.
