On the morning of September 21, 2014, the Prevent Cancer Foundation will host its annual 5K Walk/Run at Nationals Park. My husband and I are particularly excited to be a part of this event and support Prevent Cancer’s mission of saving lives through cancer prevention and early detection.

If you keep tabs on the DC area food scene, you may know who he is: Chef William Artley of Pizzeria Orso fame in Falls Church, VA. Orso’s not just any ol’ pizzeria, oh no. It’s an authentic Neapolitan-style pizzeria that also offers all the top-notch “Cheffie-froo-froo” food so many know and appreciate him for.
So, here’s the skinny on my hubbie (pun intended). He’s a formerly obese, pre-diabetic, medical-pill-reliant man who’d battled obesity his entire life. It wasn’t until he made a choice to become a walking, talking billboard for my health and wellness philosophies that he had his personal epiphany. He made a choice, believed in his choice, and stuck with it… every single day. He took ownership and responsibility for his life. He understood that if he didn’t take ownership of his health he may not be able to do the things he loved doing.
Since his personal ”Ah ha” moment, he’s shed over 100 pounds (yes, really), has tossed his medications, is no longer pre-diabetic, and has adopted a completely new lifestyle. He’s now a crazed marathon-runnin’, triathlon doin’ lunatic (in the very best way), and has an entirely new relationship with both himself and the world around him. The transformation has been incredible to witness, as its had a ripple effect in every aspect of his life and has inspired so many others to take charge of their own lives.
“Health” isn’t just about food and exercise, though it’s an important part of it. It’s about how we manage stress, how we feel about ourselves and the types of relationships we surround ourselves with, how fulfilled we may or may not be at our jobs or what we’re learning to do, the relationship we have with our money, and more.
Each day is a gift, and an opportunity to choose and do differently. Go ahead.
