Winter weather is no excuse

Let’s be honest—we all have a love/hate relationship with winter. We love the magic of the holidays, a steaming mug of hot chocolate, trendy scarves and ugly sweaters. Some people even love snow! But our daily routines are interrupted by the cold weather, especially as we try to stay fit in the winter months. Those of us who base our fitness routines on running, biking, tennis or other outdoor activities are suddenly more inclined to break out the popcorn and blankets than break a sweat—and who could blame us?

Luckily, the indoor fitness craze is in high gear, from working out with videos in the comfort of your own home to indoor fitness classes in small towns and big cities everywhere. Best of all, there is something for everyone, so you are bound to discover a video or class that works for you. Here’s the latest in indoor fitness:

Beachbody

This company has developed a series of videos that can be used in your home with your personal weights, mats and bands. Videos range from 30-90 minutes each. Each set of videos comes with a suggested workout calendar and a suggested eating plan to help keep you on track.

Soul Cycle (or Fly Wheel or Zengo)

The newest craze in cycling claims to be “indoor cycling re-invented.” Incorporating hand weights, choreography and music, this 45-minute class will work your whole body with fat-burning cardio. If it’s your first time, be sure to arrive early and ask the front desk for help adjusting your bike.

Indoor Rock Climbing

Climbing centers are cropping all over the place to serve an ever-growing population of indoor rock climbers. Those who are easily bored in fitness classes or do not appreciate group fitness will thrive on the personal challenges that come with rock climbing. Climbing instructors are available for every ability level, including beginners. Try a day pass to see if you like it, and then consider a membership to save some money.

Pure Barre

This high-intensity, low-impact class uses a ballet barre to help sculpt your hips, thighs, seat, abdominals and arms. Classes are 55 minutes long and do not require any dance experience—just determination and a positive attitude! Pure Barre claims that, depending on your diet and other variables, you can see results after just 10 classes.

Community Centers

Most local community centers, gyms and YMCAs also offer classes, ranging from boot camp to dance to martial arts. Search online to find out what’s being offered in your area. The sheer variety guarantees there is something out there to fit your interests, schedule and price range. Don’t be afraid to try something new—even the pros were beginners at some point.

 

Don’t let the winter chill be your excuse to stop moving. Moderate exercise just three times a week can significantly improve your health and reduce your cancer risk.
