A recent study published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology discovered that heavy smokers and heavy drinkers are at greater risk for developing pancreatic cancer. Looking at pancreatic cancer patients and high-risk individuals, researchers found heavy drinkers and heavy smokers were diagnosed 10 to 12 years earlier than the average age of detection, 72 years old. The study also discovered that after 10 years of giving up these habits, former smokers and drinkers did not show an increased risk of developing pancreatic cancer at an earlier age.
