Keep Your Health in Mind for your Fourth of July Barbeque

But the holiday’s traditional foods like cheeseburgers, hot dogs, ribs and pies, can take a big toll on your health. This year, throw a Fourth of July party that’s equally fun, delicious and health conscious.

One-third of all new cancer diagnoses are related to obesity, minimal physical activity and a poor diet. Don’t use a holiday as an excuse to binge eat. Start or keep up your healthy habits with these simple tips:

Cook lean meats
Red meats have been linked to a higher risk for several cancers as well as heart disease and type-2 diabetes. Grill chicken or fish this year instead for that cook-out flavor without the extra fat.

Serve whole wheat bread
Add some fiber, iron and other important vitamins to your day with wheat bread. White bread also causes spikes in your insulin levels making your body store fat. Whole wheat bread is a better option to cut some fat from your diet.

Substitute fruit for dessert
Skip the pies, cakes, cupcakes and brownies this year. Instead, you can make delicious, easy desserts with red and blue berries that match the theme of the day perfectly. Serve bowls of strawberries, blueberries and whipped cream for a red white and blue treat. You can also slice watermelon and use cookie cutters to make fun, themed shapes.

Set up activities
Organize a fun game of kickball, badminton or Frisbee. You’ll burn calories while enjoying a great holiday with your family and friends.

If you can’t resist apple pie or hamburgers, remember moderation is key. Fill up half your plate first with salad or veggies to help you not overdo it on the high-calorie options.
