Free webcast on cancer funding – February 13 at 3:00 p.m. EST

The Prevent Cancer Foundation is holding a free webcast this Thursday, February 13 from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. EST. We hope you will join us at www.preventcancerwebcast.org to learn more about “Funding Cancer Research in an Era of Fiscal Restraint.” This timely educational event will explore the different challenges for federal funding such as the lingering effects of sequestration, budget battles and competition for resources and how we can work together to successfully advocate to support cancer research.

The event will be moderated by Susan Dentzer, who is currently Senior Policy Advisor to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Our panelists will include:

Andrew C. von Eschenbach, M.D., who currently serves as President of Samaritan Health Initiatives, Inc. and as an Adjunct Professor at University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. From September of 2005 to January 2009 Dr. von Eschenbach served as Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration. He joined the FDA after serving for four years as Director of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) at the National Institutes of Health.

Michael Robinson, who is the Member Services and Coalitions Director for the House Committee on Appropriations. In this capacity, he is the primary point of contact with outside groups and associations who have interests before the Committee facilitating a free flow of information to ensure that all issues are fully addressed. He also works to address Member interests and build Member and grass-roots support for Appropriations Bills when they go to Committee and the House floor.

George Weiner, M.D. who is a Medical Oncologist and translational cancer investigator and has been on the faculty at the University of Iowa since 1989. He is currently Director of the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, Professor of Internal Medicine, C.E. Block Chair of Cancer Research and a faculty member in the Interdisciplinary Program in Immunology at the University of Iowa.

The first hour of the webcast will be a discussion among panelists regarding cancer funding.
