The Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA), a Washington-based coalition chaired by First Lady Michelle Obama is focusing on the private sector to help stop the childhood obesity epidemic. In the past year the group has signed nearly 20 deals with the some of the biggest food companies in America.

The PHA is working with companies to make it viable to offer increasingly healthy choices without hurting their bottom lines. For instance, Wal-Mart is currently working with its suppliers to lower the cost of fresh food. Just recently the retailer lowered the price of whole-wheat pasta to that of white pasta.

Dara Restaurants, operator of chains such as Olive Garden and Red Lobster, now has plans to reduce sodium in all their dishes by 20 percent over the next decade.

The PHA also has Hyatt hotels working on childhood nutrition issues. Beginning next year Hyatt will offer more fruits and vegetables with their children’s meals and make the default drink option milk instead of soda.
