Caffeine May Help Protect Skin from UV Rays

There have been a number of recent studies examining the possible cancer preventive properties of caffeine and coffee, focused mainly on prostate and non-melanoma skin cancers. Researchers at Rutgers University, though, have found that ingesting caffeine or rubbing it on the skin may help reduce the risk of developing skin cancer caused by harmful UV rays, due in part to its ability to hinder the protein enzyme ATR during the pre-cancerous stage. Although it remains to be seen just how effective caffeine is in the later stages of cancer development, for now coffee drinkers can rest assured that that morning cup of coffee may provide a little extra protection for their skin.
