An Intern’s Eye View of the Foundation

When one thinks of summer, what usually comes to mind is going to the beach, hitting up the movies, tanning oil (or sun screen if you’re smart) and basically some good old rest, relaxation and rejuvenation. However, for the typical college student residing in the D.C. metropolitan area, the hustle and bustle of the city is much more intriguing.

I have spent the last three months at the Prevent Cancer Foundation  as a Marketing and Communications intern and my time here is quickly coming to an end. I feel truly fortunate to have been given such a great opportunity with which to fill my summer days. Not only have I learned a lot during my time with the Foundation, but I’ve also met some great people.

The words “internship in DC” usually suggest an abundance of “busy work,” an aloof full time staff and generally just a way to get your foot in the door. Yes, internships are a way to get your foot in the door; however, I’ve had the opportunity to do so much more. I feel like the Foundation has really taken my input to heart and appreciated all the work that I’ve done. Even though frustrating at times, such as work done in the temperamental content management system, it always seemed to be rewarding in the end.

The Prevent Cancer Foundation has opened my eyes to the world of non-profits. From my short time here, I could really see myself working at a non-profit in the future. The Foundation works toward a great cause, emphasizing the prevention aspect of fighting cancer through research, education and community outreach to all populations.  It has been my privilege to witness it from a behind the scenes perspective.

From the strategic planning of their social media to the promotion of their upcoming 5K, the Prevent Cancer Foundation has provided me with valuable experience that I’m sure to use in my future endeavors.
