Prevention and politics: Why your voice matters

Midterm elections are upon us. If you are like most Americans, you can’t wait for November 4 to come and go, so that you are no longer bombarded with political commercials and mailings, requests for money, and appeals for votes. It’s easy to get frustrated by our political system. There is significant gridlock and partisanship. The debates and disagreements can be nasty. Meaningful change often moves at an extremely slow pace. So what if you just don’t vote next week? Maybe you don’t have time, don’t fully understand the issues, or just don’t care very much.

You’ve probably heard that you can’t complain if you don’t vote. While that familiar saying holds some truth, there is another important component to consider. Not voting is also an expression of what you value. It means that the critical issues of cancer prevention and early detection won’t be represented in Congress if we don’t take the time to support candidates who prioritize health and wellness.

When Congress reconvenes for the 114th Congress, there will be many issues at stake including health care implementation and funding for biomedical research. The financial nightmare of sequestration is going to rear its ugly head once more (remember furloughs for federal workers, downsizing of Head Start programs, and air traffic control towers facing closures). The next year will also set the stage for the 2016 Presidential elections.

Regardless of which candidates you vote for on November 4, the most important thing is that cast your ballot.
