ALEXANDRIA, VA — Spanish-speaking families and communities now have a new resource to assist them in finding online information on how to reduce their risk of cancer.

The Prevent Cancer Foundation has launched a Spanish-language microsite, www.prevenciondelcancer.org, to inform and educate the Latino community on cancer prevention and early detection strategies, screening guidelines, and ways to reduce cancer risk through healthy lifestyle choices. The new site continues the Foundation’s community outreach efforts to Latinos nationwide and will eventually mirror www.preventcancer.org.

According to the American Cancer Society, cancer is the second leading cause of death among Hispanics, accounting for 20 percent of deaths overall in adults. One in two Hispanic men and one in three Hispanic women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.

“As the number of Latinos diagnosed with cancer increases, this site will serve as a valuable resource for getting the word out about cancer prevention and early detection,” says Carolyn R. Aldigé, founder and president of the Prevent Cancer Foundation. “The Prevent Cancer Foundation is a catalyst for promoting cancer awareness and we want to provide families with these important tools so they can work together to reduce the risk of this disease.”

Information such as how to track your family history, how lifestyle behaviors can affect the risk of cancer and the Prevent Cancer Fact Sheets on eight preventable cancers (breast, cervical, colorectal, lung, oral, prostrate, skin, and testicular) are also available on the site. Prevent Cancer Fact Sheets contain cancer statistics, risk factors, screening guidelines and risk reduction strategies that everyone can use to take control of their own health and greatly reduce the risk of cancer.
