Alexandria, Va., Oct. 1, 2007 — With an eye toward clearly communicating its work in cancer prevention, the Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation today unveiled its new name — the Prevent Cancer Foundation — as part of its new branding effort.

“Our name has changed but our mission is the same,” said Carolyn R. Aldigé, the Foundation’s president and founder. “In going through the rebranding process, our main goals were to be able to communicate the importance of cancer prevention more clearly and to position ourselves as a leader in the cancer prevention field.”

The Prevent Cancer Foundation funds vital research that has resulted in a greater understanding of the disease and has supported more than 250 promising scientists at more than 150 leading universities and medical centers across the country. Since 1985, the foundation has provided more than $97 million in support of cancer prevention research, education and outreach programs nationwide and has played a pivotal role in developing a body of knowledge that is the basis for important prevention and early detection strategies.

The organization focuses its efforts in three distinct areas:

  • Funding vital research into finding ways to prevent cancer
  • Getting the word out through educational programs that cancer can be a preventable disease
  • Reaching out to communities by funding local cancer prevention programs across the country

“Today more than ever before, we have better weapons for fighting cancer, more options for detecting it early, and better ways to diagnose and treat cancer,” said Aldigé. Funding from the Prevent Cancer Foundation has helped researchers make significant strides in battling cancers that can be prevented — such as lung, oral, colon, testicular, breast, cervical, prostate, and skin cancer — through lifestyle changes or early detection and prompt treatment.

“Our vision is more attainable with each passing year,” said Aldigé. “We can clearly see a future where cancer is transformed into a manageable disease, or best of all, completely eradicated.” In addition to simplifying its name, the organization undertook a year-long rebrand process, resulting in a new logo and an updated Web site, www.PreventCancer.org. The organization also is producing an updated newsletter with a more modern look and more timely content, and coordinated educational materials, all with a clearer emphasis on cancer prevention.

The mission of the Prevent Cancer Foundation is cancer prevention and early detection through research, education and community outreach to all populations, including children and the underserved. For more information, visit www.PreventCancer.org.
